KEYNOTE SPEAKER

“Exercise Builds Brain Health”

Dr. Carl Cotman's research objective is to establish effective intervention strategies to reduce age-related cognitive decline. He pioneered developments that range from elucidating basic mechanisms of neural degeneration to clinical interventions. Much of his current research focuses on the importance of exercise for promoting healthy brain function, particularly, but not restricted to the aged and Alzheimer's Disease (AD). He has pioneered studies on mechanisms by which exercise can improve brain health and reduce aging-related cognitive decline. He discovered that physical exercise increases brain levels of a factor that ultimately promotes synaptic plasticity, learning, memory and brain health. He is currently co-director of a major large multisite exercise clinical trail (EXERT) aiming to encourage increased exercise in elderly with mild cognitive decline. He has received numerous awards and honors and his research team has published more than 700 publications.

THE ARNOLD O. BECKMAN FAMILY STORY
A blacksmith’s son who turned his natural inquisitiveness into a career as one of the world’s leading inventors of scientific instruments, Dr. Arnold Beckman is a classic American success story. Dr. Beckman took what life gave him and through creativity and persistence, forged a better existence for himself and others. This desire to continually search for solutions eventually led him to the invention of the pH meter and the DU Spectrophotometer, devices that revolutionized analytical chemistry, and earned him a place in the National Inventors Hall of Fame. With his wife Mabel and daughter Patricia, the Beckman family has donated millions to academic research and medical facilities. Mabel died in 1989, Arnold in 2004, and Patricia in 2011.
